Epilogue:

“I still think you could call the baby Tabby. Or Bitha. Either would work! Don’t you think, Aunt Kira?” Tabitha bounced wildly between her uncle Hunter and her new Aunt Kira.

“Maaaaybe.” Kira hedged, watching her new niece fondly.

Up on stage the mayor was giving a speech, a speech which was of no interest to the young teen. The forthcoming baby however, was very interesting to her. She had been trying to get Kira and Hunter to agree to name the baby after her for months.

“Tabitha, sit still, honey. You’re getting your aunt’s dress dirty.” Julie pulled her daughter close and shot Kira an apologetic grin.

“It’s fine.” Kira responded indulgently.

Hunter, who hadn’t seemed to be paying much attention, all of his focus on the stage, leaned over and whispered conspiratorially. “I’ll just buy her another one. Don’t worry, Tabitha. I’ve got you covered.” He winked.

Hunter wrapped his arm around his wife and let his hand rest on her enormous belly.

It was amazing what a difference a few months could make. Hunter had wanted to give Kira the wedding of her dreams, ready to spend millions to make it happen. But Kira had told him the only dream she had was of something simple, with family, and with the two of them.

She had looked like a Greek fertility Goddess, barefoot and pregnant in a loosely dropped gown that hugged her every curve and a garland of flowers to adorn her black curls. He had never imagined a more beautiful sight in his life.

He smiled down at her, and she looked up at him returning his grin. She rested her hand over his as she felt her belly tightening. She grimaced slightly.

He watched her, concerned. “Everything okay?”

“Yeah,” she responded, then grimaced again. “Just Braxton-Hicks contractions, I think.”

Julie watched her warily as her new sister-in-law doubled over as another wave of tightness came over her. “Kira… I don’t think those are false labor pains…”

“But I’m not due for another week!”

“Babies come on their own time!” Julie laughed.

“…And now, introducing the couple who brought you this wonderful new clinic— Hunter and Kira Cole!” Up on the stage the mayor was introducing them and gesturing for Hunter and Kira to come forward for the ribbon cutting ceremony.

“Whoaaaa!” Kira gasped. She looked up at her husband who was watching her with concern. “I don’t think we can stick around for the ceremony, Hunter!”

Hunter gathered her up in his arms, her pregnant weight was no hinderance to him. He shouted, “Sorry folks! Coming through! We’ll have to cut the ribbon another time! We need to go christen the Fourth floor right now— labor and delivery!”

The crowd laughed and parted before him. Julie and Tabitha followed close behind.

Kira held Hunter’s hand as he carried her into the new clinic— their clinic. This wasn’t the life she had expected for herself— she wondered how on earth one person could have been so blessed.

She leaned her head against his shoulder as another contraction hit her. She murmured in his ear. “I think I figured out the name.
